What the Northland Business Expo is all about! 

The Northland Business Expo is the brainstorm of Mitch & Shirley Weimer of BizBuilders Limited. Inspired by the Small Business Expo in Auckland, Mitch & Shirley approached the Northland Chamber of Commerce about having a business Expo for Northland back in 2008. While the Chamber wasn't prepared to put on the Expo, they were happy to get on board to support the initiative. When BizBuilders decided to take on the challenge they brought in Sara Reid from Go Forward Marketing to assist them and the 2009 Northland Business Expo was born! 2 years later the Expo is the largest B2B marketing event in Northland and a mainstay for Northland business networking for years to come.

Marketing the Northland Business Expo
Through Gold Sponsors such as The Northern Advocate, MediaWorks and C-North the Expo puts out a marketing campaign through newspaper, radio and television that exceeds over $75,000. The marketing campaign also includes email marketing through the Northland Chamber of Commerce & BizBuilders database while also including 2 separate Post Office Box drops to all of the businesses throughout Northland. Banner advertising through IGLU, brochures through PrintStop, billboard signage through Vitalsigns, all ad to the mix of getting the message out to the masses. The icing on the cake is the BizBooster Grand Prize along with over 10,000 tickets given out to booth holders as gifts for their clients to stimulate foot traffic to the Expo.

Growth & Development
The second annual Northland Business Expo was an experience of doubling. The Expo almost doubled the attendance by going from approximately 500 in 2009 to 930 individuals who attended the 2 day event in 2010. While almost doubling the attendance the Expo over doubled the BizBooster Grand Prize.

Seminars & Workshops
The Northland Business Expo sponsors 2 days of business strengthening seminars that are recorded by the local television station to be shown as ½ hour television programs. Booth holders will have the opportunity to acquire all of the videos, as they might not have been able to attend, due to having to man their booths.

Networking Awards Evening
While the Expo consists of businesses having booths to exhibit their products and services, it is much more than booths and businesses. The booths are judged and awards are given out on a Friday night networking evening. Booth holders have an opportunity to mix and mingle with each other, giving them another opportunity to promote their business amongst each other in a more relaxed setting.

Spot Prizes
During both days of the Expo every hour on the hour spot prizes that have been donated by the local businesses that make up the Expo are given out to those that fill out the BizBooster form. All this while the cameras are rolling and interviews are done for potential commercials on the local TV station.

$30,000 BizBooster Grand Prize
The 2009 Expo’s BizBooster (won by John Hewinson Canvas) was worth just over $15,000.00 while the 2010 BizBooster surpassed $30,000.00. Trevor Huett of CAD Partners was the auspicious recipient! Trevor has been involved in both of the Expo’s as a booth holder, and will be able to attend next year’s Expo free of charge with his free Expo booth courtesy of the BizBooster Grand Prize.

Community Trusts
The Expo cares about organizations that support the community. This year there were 6 booths set aside for Community Trusts that were nominated by the sponsors of the Expo. Having a booth at the Expo gives Trusts the opportunity to exhibit to the business community how they help, and how businesses can get involved.

Emerging Businesses
The Expo also is concerned with smaller businesses. This past year we created affordable booths for those that qualified for the Emerging Business section.

Strengthening Community Businesses
The main emphasis of the Northland Business Expo is strengthening the community within the business sector of Northland. The BizBooster and the Northland Business Expo is an awesome example of what can happen when the businesspeople get together and work for the common good of all. The organizers of the Expo would like to express our appreciation to all of those that had a part in making this event the awesome success it has become.
